Ending weeks of speculation, the government on Saturday announced that India’s largest military and aviation exhibition, Aero India 2019, will be held in Bengaluru between February 20-24, reports News agency.

The five-day event will combine a trade exhibition for the aerospace and defence industries with public air shows.

Earlier reports had suggested that the biennial show may be shifted out of Bengaluru, prompting Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him to ensure that the Aero India show is held in the city, as it has been since its inception in 1996.

In his letter, Kumaraswamy said Bengaluru is the hub for defence and aviation majors in the country and the “most suitable place” to hold the show.

“Bengaluru, with its past experience in conducting the show successfully, with its beautiful weather conditions and favourably located defence and aviation industries would be the best choice to conduct Aero India show,” he said.

“Hence, I would seek your indulgence in the matter to convey approval of Government of India for conducting Aero India Show-2019 at Bengaluru,” he added.

Union minister DV Sadananda Gowda, had said he was not aware of any su ch proposal. “I have only heard about these charges in the media.”

Bengaluru has been hosting the Aero show since it started in 1996. The event sees defence manufacturers display their latest wares such as fighter aircraft, cargo planes and defence equipment.
