An 18-year-old athlete succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday after he was rescused from his hostel room in the athletics academy at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday. The Sports Authority of India has ordered a “departmental inquiry“ into his death.

Police said that Police Control Room (PCR) received a call on Tuesday at 6.30 p.m. about a man who is believed to have hanged himself inside his hostel room in the stadium.

Police rushed to the spot and the man was taken to Safdurjung Hospital in a critical condition. He succumbed to his serious injuries on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as a sprinter. He was a native of Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh. The family has been informed about the incident.

Police said that during initial investigation an official of Sports Authority of India (SAI) said that he had an argument with his father the previous morning.

Prima facie it appears a case of suicide, but no note has been recovered yet, according to police.

The case is under investigation.

SAI orders inquiry
“We have ordered a departmental inquiry as the incident happened in our premises. The inquiry will be headed by Secretary SAI Swarn Singh Chabra and it should be completed within a week,” SAI Director General Neelam Kapur told PTI.

Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who is in Rajasthan, has been informed and he has expressed his grief on the incident.

In 2017, the victim was selected for the Asian Youth Championship in Bangkok and won gold medal in relay. He also participated at the World Youth Championship last July.
