China’s Media outreach following Modi-Xi Wuhan Summit

The Chinese Ambassador to India H.E. Luo Zhaohui during a visit to Prasar Bharati House, the headquarters of the Indian Public Broadcaster, emphasised the high importance China attaches to public outreach in India following the Modi-Xi Summit in Wuhan earlier this year.

Describing how India’s soft power through Bollywood and Yoga had made inroads in China, he spoke of how both China and India have planned to engage at the people to people level in the months to come building on the chord struck in Wuhan. Ambassador Luo also spoke of how a popular Chinese movie has increased mainstream awareness on Indian healthcare and low cost access to cancer drugs.

Echoing the Chinese Ambassador on the importance of people to people engagement, Chairman Prasar Bharati A. Surya Prakash explained how India’s Public Broadcaster had engaged with Chinese state television in recent years through a MoU for content sharing. He also shared with the Chinese Ambassador the potential for further engagement through co-production of content highlighting our shared history and cultural values going back several thousands of years with the spread of Buddhism from India to China.

Both sides agreed to take the conversation forward with CEO Prasar Bharati Shashi Shekhar Vempati highlighting that sharing of news could be another area of exchange by public broadcasters of both countries.
