BHOPAL: The Congress may stitch a pre-poll alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party in Madhya Pradesh in the next fortnight by offering Mayawati’s party nearly 25 of the 230 assembly seats to contest.

State leaders of the Congress are keen to firm up the alliance before party president Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to Bhopal and Vidisha on September 17, said people aware of the matter. They said that the party’s state president Kamal Nath will have crucial talks with BSP leaders next week. The Congress also wants to put out its first list of candidates for 70-80 seats around the time of Gandhi’s visit.

“There are about 60 seats that the Congress has not won for a long time. The first list may be of candidates on those seats. That is why it is important that the alliance with the BSP be firmed up quickly now.

Nath recently told The Nationalist that although the Congress was confident of defeating the BJP on its own an alliance with the BSP would help it decimate the ruling party in the upcoming election.

The BSP has been pressing the Congress for more than two dozen seats in Bhind, Morena, Rewa and Satna regions, which are close to the border with Uttar Pradesh.

It holds four seats in the present state assembly and had finished second in eight more seats in the 2013 assembly elections. Therefore, it has a rightful claim on contesting a dozen seats, while the Congress is ready to offer it nearly double those seats, said the people cited earlier.

share of the Congress was 36.79% and the BJP won nearly 44% votes. A state BJP leader said, “We are alert to the possible tie-up. We believe the BSP will not be able to transfer its votes to the Congress
