NEW DELHI: After the Congress’ stupendous performance in the just-concluded assembly polls, party president Rahul Gandhi is set to begin his NRI outreach tours with a second visit to West Asia.

Gandhi will be on a two-day trip to Dubai and Abu Dhabi on January 11 and 12. This will be his first tour in the New Year.

The trip is being organised by Indian Overseas Congress headed by Sam Pitroda. During his last foreign visit, the Congress president had travelled to Germany and London in August.

Sources in the Congress told that the contours of the upcoming trip have not been finalised yet, but it would generally be on the lines of his previous tours.

Gandhi is supposed to address a large gathering of overseas Indians either in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. West Asia has a sizeable population of India diaspora, especially from the southern states.

India Overseas Congress, the NRI wing of the party, is looking to book an indoor stadium for a town hall in any of the two cities.

Enthused by victory in the assembly elections, the organisers are expecting to attract larger audience than the earlier events. “We can’t give the numbers, but we want maximum people to participate and hear the Congress president live,” said a leader.

“After the victory in states, more people are interested in attending the event and this would be a good opportunity to showcase our success to an audience which has strong influence back home.” The trip was earlier planned in October this year.

“But because of his preoccupation with campaigning we had to postpone it,” said a party source associated with the programme. During the elections, Gandhi campaigned extensively in MP, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

He also addressed rallies in Mizoram for a da Gandhi’s NRI outreach programme started in September last year, with a visit to the US followed by a Bahrain trip in January this year.

Since then he has travelled to Singapore, Malaysia, Germany and the UK. Gandhi might visit Canada too before 2019 elections.
