BIG BREAKING

New Delhi: Day after Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC) president Dipenne Pathak and two other party leaders resigned over NRC issue, a revolt-like situation appears to hit the Assam Congress as well. Some Congress leaders from the state are likely to revolt against the party on NRC issue.

A Congress leader from Assam said, “NRC issue is a concern for every citizen of Assam. Congress' move on the issue will create a big political damage to the party in Assam. We are heading towards the general elections soon... How can we face the people of Assam, for whom infiltration and illegal immigrants are emotional issues."

According to sources, as many as 5 MLAs and some organisational leader from Assam Congress wrote a letter to party chief Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, requesting them to support NRC as "it is in favour of Assam".

When tried to contact senior Congress leader Ashok Gahlot, he refused to comment.

The Assam Congress leaders have expressed the fear that the continuous opposition to NRC might cause a revolt in the party. One of the congress leaders from Assam told News junction, “The issue of foreigners has dominated the Assam politics for a long time. The issue has brought  a deep sense of distrust among the Assamese society. As Assam citizens, we are committed to freeing Assam from illegal immigrants."

Close sources said some of the Congress leaders from Assam were in touch with state finance minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma. When contacted, Sarma said: “Congress is by nature a party of double standards. Their leaders speak differently in Assam and in Delhi. Congress will pay for it heavily in next election." When asked if he was in touch with Congress leaders, he said, "... Congress has lost all grounds in Assam and in the country. I am not in touch with any leader right now, if any leader will contact, we will see."

At present, Congress has three MPs from Assam and 26 MLAs.
