Guwahati: Former Meghalaya chief minister DD Lapang tendered his resignation to the Congress party on Friday, ending an over 40-year association with it over what he said was a “policy of phasing out senior and elderly people”.

In a letter to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the 84-year-old leader said, “Lately, the AICC has been embarking upon a policy of phasing out senior and elderly people. In my opinion it means that their service and contribution of the senior and elderly people is no longer useful to the party.”

He added, “Since the spirit and enthusiasm to work for the people is still burning inside me, this restriction made me frustrated and compelled me to no longer be in the party.

With my present age and health condition, I have decided to continue to serve the country, my state and its people in the same manner, whatever I am.”

Lapang was dropped from the post of president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) before the Assembly polls this year. “Reluctantly and with a heavy heart, I would like to discontinue my dedication towards the Congress party and I tender my resignation with immediate effect,” Lapang wrote.

Recalling his association with the Congress, Lapang said, “During these years, I worked devotedly, leaving no stone unturned while performing my service for the party, as a true and disciplined Congressman and always cooperated with the AICC, even to the extent of accepting sacrifices for the sake of unity and strength of the party.”

The former CM had decided not to contest the Assembly polls. Lapang, who has a strong following in the Khasi-Jantia hills area, first became MLA in 1972 as an independent candidate.

On April 20, 2010, Mukul Sangma was sworn in as the chief minister, replacing Lapang. Sangma resigned in 2018 after the Congress failed to secure majority in the Assembly polls.
