Congress President Rahul Gandhi, representing Amethi Lok Sabha seat from 2004, is preparing to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Karnataka as well. After becoming the BJP President, Amit Shah and Modi, both, have kept Central Minister Smriti Irani active in Amethi despite her defeat against Rahul Gandhi in the last Lok Sabha elections. Due to activeness of Smriti Irani and after understanding her increasing influence, Congress strategists are looking out for an idea safe seat for their President Rahul Gandhi.

The Nationalist did a detailed tour of Amethi Lokh Sabha from 1st September to 15th September and the feedbacks which it received in these 15 days from the local residents from the Amethi seat are very shocking. The feedbacks which the local residents gave clearly indicate that Rahul Gandhi might have to face defeat against Smriti Irani in Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Local Congress leader of Amethi told the Nationalist on condition of anonymity that winning in Amethi will not be very easy for Rahul ji now. The work of Yogi Government in the state and Modi Government in centre along with continuously decreasing contact of Rahul Gandhi will the public of Amethi will make it difficult for Rahul Gandhi.

A local teacher told the Nationalist in a conversation that despite losing elections, Smriti Irani has been coming to Amethi continuously whereas even after winning Rahul ji comes occasionally. With a heavy heart, former Congress MLA said that Rahul doesn’t have that emotional connect with Amethi which the Gandhi family used to have. Now, the public is not in the situation to vote on the name of Gandhi family.

Congress is expecting that after coalition with Samajwadi Party and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party it will not be difficult for the Congress to win Raebareli and Amethi seats. But the Congress is worried of the situation where the alliance and SP doesn’t reach to any conclusion then the situation for the party in the state will be difficult. At the moment, the Congress is waiting for Mayawati and Akhilesh to come on same page. In Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati doesn’t wants to talk to Akhilesh about the grand alliance and Akhilesh, as of now, is refraining from alliance with Rahul. The Congress strategists are also afraid that in Uttar Pradesh the government is of BJP, in such a situation BJP, which is looking to defeat Rahul Gandhi anyhow, will influence the government machinery to defeat Rahul Gandhi.

In such a situation, where alliance with SP and BSP doesn’t happen, the Congress can make their President contest Lok Sabha elections from any other seat apart from Amethi so as to send him to Lok Sabha. Foreseeing the possible defeat in Amethi, Congress is looking for a safe seat in Karnataka for Rahul Gandhi. Sources reveal that Sonia Gandhi has asked her political advisor Ahmed Patel and Congress leader in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge to find a safe seat for Rahul in Karnataka. A senior Congress leader from Karnataka told The Nationalist, "Kumaraswamy, who became Chief Minister in Karnataka with our support, will not field his contestants if Rahul Gandhi contests elections from Karnataka rather will support him. In such a situation, Rahul’s victory from Karnataka is certain.

Notably, Sonia Gandhi contested her first Lok Sabha election in 1999 from Amethi along with Bellary, Karnataka, which was considered to be the safest seat for the Congress. Later, Sonia Gandhi resigned from the Bellary seat.

Congress also acknowledges the fact that BJP can go to any level to defeat the Congress President. In such a situation, the Congress is not ready to take any risk by making Rahul contest elections from Amethi.
