West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has positioned herself at the forefront of the anti-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) force, met Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath in New Delhi.
Discussing ways of forming a united opposition, Mamata told Sonia Gandhi that the opposition parties should fight from states they have a strong hold in and after elections a prime minister can be selected.
The trio discussed how they can "all fight together". "Politically BJP is tensed as they know they are not coming back in 2019. Our first aim is to defeat BJP," Mamata said.
Mamata Banerjee also invited Sonia and Rahul Gandhi for her rally on January 19, 2019. Talking about her relationship with the Gandhis, she said, "We have a long relationship with them since Rajiv ji's time."
Rahul, Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee also discussed the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Regarding the NRC issue, Mamata is of the opinion that the people whose names that were not included in the final draft of the NRC were not outsiders.
Mamata had earlier said the exclusion of 40 lakh people from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) may lead to "bloodbath" and "civil war" in the country. Following this, the Assam Police registered two FIRs against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after receiving complaints that her statements are divisive in nature and may create animosity between communities in Assam.
Clarifiying her statement, Mamata said, "40 lakh people are being removed from this country, what does BJP want- civil war or peace? We don't want civil war, we want peace in this country".
