A high alert has been sounded in Jammu and Kashmir after terrorists abducted family members of five police personnel in South Kashmir on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. The abductions were carried out after the terrorists raided houses of many policemen in the Kashmir Valley.

This comes a day after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Syed Shakeel Ahmad, who is the son of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.

The arrest was made on Thursday morning after the NIA raided Shakeel's house in Rambagh area of Srinagar. He was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into a terror-funding case.

The abduction reportedly took place in Shoipan, Kulgam, Anantnag and Awantipora in Kashmir.Sources privy to the matter say all the abducted persons are relatives of police personnel working in Jammu and Kashmir.

News agency said that one of the abducted persons is the brother of a deputy superintendent of police-rank officer. On Thursday, two terrorists and four security personnel were killed in an encounter in Shopian area of South Kashmir.

This is not the first time that terrorists have targeted unarmed family members of security personnel in Kashmir. In the past one year, there have been many cases wherein security personnel have been attacked and killed when they were on leave.
