DELHI/Just before the Lok Sabha elections, BJP is preparing to give a jolt to Nitish Kumar, who gave a shock to BJP and formed the government with Lalu in Bihar after Bihar Assembly elections and after that gave a shock to Lalu and is running a government by forming alliance with BJP.

Trusted sources of BJP informed that Nitish Kumar has sent a proposal to BJP high command regarding Lok Sabha elections proposing that BJP should contest elections on 20 seats out of 40 in Bihar whereas Janta Dal United would contest on 15 out of rest of the 20 seats and Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party should contest on remaining five.

In this formula of distribution of seats by Nitish Kumar, it is proposed that Upendra Kushwaha, Minister of State in Modi Government, should be kept out of the coalition. BJP sources inform that BJP has not replied to the proposal of Nitish Kumar but it won’t be possible for BJP to accept this proposal because BJP’s 22 MPs in the current Lok Sabha are from Bihar.

In 2014, BJP contested elections on 30 seats out of 40 and out of those it won 22 seats. Ram Vilas Paswan’s party contested elections on seven seats and won six. Upendra Kushwaha’s party contested elections on three seats and won all the three. A MP of Kushwaha’s party is a rebel as of now. Nitish’s party has only two MPs in Bihar right now. A senior BJP leader says that Nitish can’t be trusted. He can withdraw support from BJP anytime. Whereas a BJP leader from Bihar says that Nitish is not in position of negotiation with BJP. After splitting from Lalu and making government with BJP it won’t be possible for Nitish to return back to Lalu. After defeating Nitish in assembly and Lok Sabha by-elections, Lalu’s son – Tejaswi and Tej Pratap – won’t be interested in joining hands with him again. In such a situation, Nitish has no choice but to stay with BJP. Nitish alone can’t do any miracles in Bihar. A leader of Janta Dal says that no one knows what decision Nitish will take at the last minute except Nitish. There is confusion in the party right now.

A close aide of Nitish says that it is difficult to say that what is going on in BJP’s mind, because today the confidence between BJP and Nitish is not as it was during the time of Vajpayee and Advani. The leader says that Nitish used to be a big and prominent leader in the NDA during Vajpayee’s time as compared to today’s NDA. The then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani used to communicated with Nitish regularly and both the leaders used to respect as far as Bihar is concerned but the situation is different in BJP of Modi and Shah. The interaction between Prime Minister Modi and the Chief Minister of Bihar is very rare. President Shah himself looks in the matters of Bihar, and there is no warmth in the relation of Shah and Nitish. It is noteworthy that in the Bihar Legislative Council elections, held a few months back, the BJP asked for half of the seats from Nitish Kumar. BJP has only 53 MLAs in the assembly while JDU has 70, still three candidates of both the parties contested the elections and Nitish couldn’t stop BJP from this.

Sources inform that the Sangh has also advised the BJP’s central leadership in its feedback that BJP’s position is good in Bihar and BJP is in a position to perform better than earlier on the backdrop of Modi’s work and due to the organization.

The Sangh has advised BJP to contest elections on 25 Lok Sabha seats and also sent a list of those seats where BJP can win without coalition. After the feedback from the Sangh, the prospects are very low that BJP would agree on 20 seats going by the formula of Nitish Kumar. Sources reveal that BJP doesn’t want to show its cards as of now and it will take decision on seat distribution in Bihar right before the elections. BJP is currently focusing on the assembly elections of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, which will happen a few months later, and will finalize its strategy after the results of these three states.

A senior BJP leader says that currently BJP is thinking on the formula where it will contest elections on 25 seats in Bihar. It is planning to leave nine seats will be for Nitish’s party, four for Ram Vilas Paswan’s party and two seats for Upendra Kushwaha.

Modi and Shah, who are known to take shocking decisions, can also shock Nitish in Bihar with their decision. It should not be surprising if Nitish Kumar, who is known to shock allies, gets a shock from BJP this time.
