Accepting the Maharashtra government's demand, the Centre has finally changed the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport as Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport. Announcing the development, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Thursday that the long pending demand of people of Maharashtra is now fulfilled.

“Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is now Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport. Congratulations to the people of Maharashtra, the long pending demand is now fulfilled. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji for the concern towards the sentiments of the people of Maharashtra,” Prabhu tweeted.

A resolution to insert the word ‘Maharaj’ to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was passed by the Maharashtra assembly in 2016. The demand was first made by BJP MP Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati, a descendant of Shivaji, arguing that the Maratha warrior king deserved more respect.

While the railway station's name was changed immediately, the request to change the airport's name had been pending. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry had put on hold requests to change the name the airport on the grounds that existing rules do not permit a change in airport names.

Raje had raised the issue repeatedly, in letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and in Parliament. The Civil Aviation Ministry had said that no decision could be taken on changing the name of the airports pending approval of a policy, The Hindu had reported in May this year.

“We have drafted policy guidelines on naming/renaming of airports which inter alia propose to keep the name of existing airports unchanged. As the decision on the renaming of Mumbai airport depends upon the finalisation of the policy, which involves consultation at various levels, the exact time to rename Mumbai airport cannot be ascertained at this stage,” the ministry had said.Earlier this month, Shiv Sena workers protested outside the airport to change its name.
