Trouble seems to be brewing in Maharashtra as several Congress leaders in the state met AICC General secretary Mallikarjun Kharge and demanded that the party shunt out Sanjay Nirupam as the Mumbai Congress Chief and replace him with Milind Deora or any other leader.

On Sunday Congress leaders comprising former Congress MP Eknath Gaekwad, former MLA’s Baba Siddiqui, Kripashankar Singh and sitting MLA’s Nassim Khan and Amin Patel met Kharge and sought that the party replace Nirupam with Deora.

Congress leaders confirmed to The Nationalist that they took such a delegation to meet Kharge. “ We met Kharge because if you want to revive the Congress, you want a young face who has a good equation with the business community and can unite the various factions in the Congress as was seen today, then that face is Milind Deora.”said Congress MLA Amin Patel to The Nationalsit.

Patel was obviously referring to how from former Congress MP Eknath Gaekwad to Ex MLA Baba Siddiqui who is considered close to Priya Dutt and Dharmesh Vyas from the Gurudas Kamat faction were all present along with Nassim Khan, Kripashankar Singh and Janardhan Chandurkar all united and together in their demand that the party shunt out Nirupam and bring out Nirupam.

Top leaders from Delhi congress also told The Nationalist that there are chances to appoint new face as Mumbai president. Loksabha and Assembly election are near and party need to do a lot in Mumbai. When ask when the decision will take place, senior leader said “ It is all depend on Rahul Ji”, but we hope within a month Mumbai will see new congress president.”

Patel claimed that they had not consulted Milind before meeting Kharge. “We have not spoken to Milind, we have taken the step in the interest of the Congress unity as it is vital that Milind leads the Mumbai Congress, Mumbai needs his leadership as the performance of the Congress in Mumbai is something that will be watched by the entire nation.”said Patel. He added that Kharge had ‘appreciated their views’ and said that they would be conveyed to the Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress leaders have also sought a meeting with Rahul this week to personally tell him the need for replacing Nirupam.

The Mumbai Congress Chief on his part when contacted sent in a statement saying that he was working at the instructions of Rahul Gandhi to ‘revive the party in Mumbai’. “Every other day I am on the street for the cause of Mumbaikars and I will keep on fighting for their cause too. It is upto my leaders to decide how long I have to work for the party as President. I am a Rahul Gandhi loyalist and will abide by all his instructions whatever he wishes.”said Nirupam.
Nirupam supporters have however slammed the delegations saying that it was an ‘opportunistic alliance’ of Congress leaders who were not contributing to the party.

“The man who headed the delegation is Kripashankar Singh, who only a day back was seen with the BJP Chief Minister and said that while he is today in the Congress there is no saying what would happen tomorrow.”said a Nirupam supporter.

He added that none of these leaders who went to the delegation contributed to the Congress and had not even participated in the Bharat bandh of the Congress. “ How successful was the Congress bandh in south Mumbai, which Milind represents.”questioned the Nirupam supporter.
