A group of opposition parties have decided to field a joint candidate against the nominee of the ruling front for the Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson’s post announced on Monday.JDU’s Harivansh Narayan Singh is likely to be the NDA candidate while the opposition may field Vandana Chavan (NCP) or Tiruchi Siva (DMK).
Even nominated MP KTS Tulsi has been trying to mobilise support of unattached opposition MPs. NDA needs to secure BJD’s backing to ensure its nominee’s win, while the opposition can secure win even if BJD abstains. Shiv Sena insiders said that it will decide on NDA’s candidate soon, even as a BJP leader is learnt to have reached out. BJD sources said the party was likely to keep away. It had not participated in the debate and voting during the no-confidence motion. However, a section of various opposition party leaders who met on Monday evening, and would meet again on Tuesday to possibly announce the name of their candidate, felt the ‘surprise’ announcement of the election indicated that NDA had secured the support o f TRS , AIADMK and even BJD. A representative of TDP also attended the meeting of like-minded parties held at opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s office in Parliament complex where representatives of Trinamool, SP, BSP, DMK, NCP, RJD, JDS, I . IUML, KCM were present.

Despite being a part of the NDA, JDU does not have any representation in Modi’s Council of Ministers though Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has BJP ministers in his government.

BJP has 73 members in the 244 member RS. If BJD abstains, the half way mark would come down to 118. JDU has six members, SAD (3), Nominated (4), while BPF, SDF, NPF and RPI(A) have one member each. NDA will also need votes of AIADMK (13), Independent and others (6) to win. No whip can be issued in the election which makes the contest close to call
