Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is on a pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar, is scheduled to be back in Delhi on September 12, party sources privy to his programme said.

Unlike Sonia Gandhi constituting a four-member committee for managing the party affairs during her month-long trip to the US in 2011, there will be no formal alternative set-up this time when the Congress president will be away from the capital for a fortnight.

If an important matter arises, AICC general secretaries can coordinate among themselves and also consult seniors such a s party treasurer Ahmed Patel, general secretary in charge of organisation Ashok Gehlot and AK Antony to make a decision, the sources said

While Rahul Gandhi presided over a meeting of the recently constituted poll-related Congress core group on August 30, a day before he left for the pilgrimage, other two similar party panels — the manifesto and publicity committees — will meet on Monday and Thursday, respectively, sources said.

“There is no need for a formal alternative arrangement to oversee work till Rahulji returns. While AICC general secretaries will coordinate the work, if required, they will also discuss the matters with some seniors. Also, technology now allows the leaders to contact Rahulji over the phone or email for consultations in the event of an extremely important development during his pilgrimage,”a senior AICC functionary said.Congress parliamentary party leader Sonia Gandhi “is also very much in Delh . the person said.

. AICC general secretaries and some working committee members with independent charge of states will, as usual, focus on their delegated responsibilities, the AICC functionary said. When Sonia Gandhi went to the US for a surgery in August 2011, she issued a statement about constituting a committee comprising Rahul Gandhi, Patel, Antony and Janaradan Dwivedi to oversee Congress matters during her absence.

Rahul Gandhi began his Kailash Mansarovar trip from Nepal on August 31, in accordance with a wish he expressed after the aircraft carrying him developed technical snag during a Karnataka election campaign trip in April. He is scheduled to resume his campaign tours of election-bound states with a trip to Madhya Pradesh on September 17.
