Election for a new deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha will be held today. The post of the deputy chairman has been vacant since june following of the retirement of PJ Kurien, who was elected to the upper House of Parliament on a congress ticket from kerala. The Deputy chairman’s election has become a prestige issue of sorts for both the fictions. Opposition parties, who are already feeling the heat from Naidu, desperately want the post to go to their choice of candidate. Morever, a victory could also add to their moral ahead of 2019 polls.

NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh is likely to win the election for Deputy chairman of RajyaSabha, againdt the Opposition candidate of congress BK Hariprasad.

Though, the vote arithmetic favour the opposition parties that have a combined strength of 114,including PDP of jammu and Kashmir, is still fall 8 short from the halfway mark of 122 votes. All eyes are now on the MPs of fence sitter parties. The opposition is not rulling out possibility of a split in AIADMK votes as the party does not have a chief whip in the upper House.

Odisha CM Naveen patnik’s office confirmed BJP president Amit shah, HM Rajnat singh spoke to the Odisha CM on the issue. Though odisha CM Naveen patnik will make his party’s stand public only on voting day, but insider said that Patnik committed his MP’s voted to the JDU MP when Bihar CM Nitish called him on Tuesday.

The BJP would of course, find it advantageous to have it’s candidate win because then the chairman Naidu and his deputy would both be their choices. For the congress retaining the post would come as a big boost. The number game is neither sure for NDA nor for UPA.

The current strength of the RajyaSabha is 244,so the support of 123 members would be needed for a win. That is,If it is full house, which may not be the case since the demine of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi in Chennai.

The lack of majority in the Rajyasabha has been a big problem for the BJP. The BJP-led NDA has 93 MP’s,including those from the Shivsena with whom it isn’t exactly chummy these days.

The congress is the largest party in the RS with 50 seats. The opposition, including the congress claims it has 114 votes on its side, including two from the YSR congress. The congress-led UPA plus regional parties tally is 118. There is speculation that Mamta Banerjee’s Trinamool congress may vote for NDA candidate as Mamta don’twant to directly confront JDU chief Nitish Kumar’s party.

There are at least 37 MP’s who can tilt the balance. They are the AIADMK 13, BJD 9, TRS 6,PDP 2, INLD 1 and independents 6. In this situation which party abstains and who actively supports which camp will be equally important.
